Looming Island There are two ways to get to Santorini, by airplane, and by boat. Flying is faster, but less scenic, and you miss the spectacular approach to the island that greets the ferries as they round the edge of the caldera, as hinted at in this photograph taken a few minutes before the boat has turned into Santorini. The thin cap of white on the left peak is a cluster of whitewashed buildings; what appears to be a heavy coating of snow further left is the ash layer from the Minoan eruption. The layering evident in the cliff face is from the deposits of prehistoric eruptions going back many millenia. Copyright 2008, J. S. Pezaris AREADNE | Email | Archive |
