Church and Roof Decorations Residents of Santorini seek distinction beyond the brilliance of whitewashed buildings and azure water by decorating the rooftops of their buildings. This serves a dual purpose, first, as extensions to their living spaces since they afford excellent views, and second as general beautification since neighbors often have direct visibility of the top of each other's buildings. The artifacts in the foreground of this photo include a folding bedframe, suggesting that the roof might be used as a place to sleep during the hot summer nights. Copyright 2012, J. S.
