Fuscia Garland Residents of the Cycladic islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Ios, and their sister islands traditionally whitewash their flat-roofed stone buildings to a sun-reflecting brilliance. While practical to keep temperatures down in the summer, the expanse of uninterrupted white begs to be adored. Thus, to provide artistic flair, flowering plants such as gardenias or, as shown here, bougainvilleas are used for visual accents. The combination of sunbathed white and saturated color is striking.
