JTR Airport

The Santorini airport (IATA code JTR) while technically an international airport complete with customs and passport controll if so needed, is a very small airport with limited size. During departures, the gate area is often so crowded that there is barely room to stand, and travelers are advised to go upstairs to the outdoor seating area. There are no jetways at JTR: passengers are bussed to and from all flights. During the summer months, many charter flights provide passage along with the scheduled service of Aegean and Olympic Airlines. If you arrive at the airport for a departure and see an incredibly long line snaking outside the terminal, it is probably for a charter flight.

As of late 2019, the airport is undergoing a significant expansion that should be ready by Summer 2020. Everyone hopes that the additional space will alleviate the crowding issues.

This photo, taken when landing just after dawn, shows the tower and terminal building, with nearly the full extent of the airport shown. The shaded outdoor observation deck can be seen right in the center of the frame, above the words "Santorini Airport" in small letters on the outside of the building.
