Mining Museum
open 10 AM - 2 PM, 6 PM - 9 PM (closed Mondays)
+30-22870-22481
on main road in Adámas. This is a wonderful small museum of the
geological and industrial history of Milos. Don't miss the video that
continuously plays in the basement theater.
Visit the Catacombs
9:00 AM to 6:45 PM daily except Tuesday.
+30 22870-21625
The catacombs are a modest but historically significant
early Christian burial site, carved into the volcanic rock near the
village of Tripiti. The site is accessible only with a tour that
leads visitors through a short underground passage where ancient
niches and inscriptions give a sense of the island’s early Christian community.
Visit the Ancient Amphitheater
Open daily (no access control).
The ancient amphitheater of Milos, located very close to
the catacombs, offers an elegant glimpse of classical
life. Built of white marble and partly restored, it provides
views both of its tiered seating and the surrounding bay. A map near
the entrance shows the original, significantly larger, extent of the
seating area.
Climb to Plaka Castle
Daily (no access control).
Plaka is a short drive or bus ride from Adámas. From the main
square, keep walking up and up, and up, and you will be rewarded with
a marvelous view of the island. This climb has a large number of
stairs, and in the summer heat can be challenging. There is no shade
and no water available once you depart the plaza in Plaka.
Take a boat tour of the island
Daily, weather permitting, full-day tours usually leave about 9 AM.
We are planning an optional boat tour of the island for the morning
of 26 June 2026 for conference participants, but there are operators
who can offer accompanying persons half or full-day excursions at
any point. Boats are lined up at the marina's edge near the main
square in Adámas.

Alevromilos, one of the highly-rated local restaurants, offers bespoke cooking
classes where participants learn to prepare traditional Cycladic
dishes under the guidance of chef Vasilis Papikinos. Over the course
of a few hours, guests cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients and
explore a wide range of recipes, from seafood to vegetarian
specialties. The experience is relaxed and social, combining
hands-on cooking with generous tastings and stories about Milos’
culinary heritage.
Pottery classes at Home of Clay.
By arrangement.
The Home of Clay in Adamas invites visitors to sit at the wheel and
shape their own pieces using local clays, with guidance from
experienced ceramicists. The studio has a warm, workshop feel, lined
with finished bowls, mugs, and sculptures that reflect both
traditional Cycladic forms and modern designs.
The beaches on Milos are beautiful and varied. They appear on both on the inner bay and around the outside of the island. Below is summary information on a handful of beaches; details and photos are available at Dave's Travel Pages. Note that the wind generally comes from the North, so that if it is breezy, beaches on the South side of the island are generally going to be more pleasant.
Arrays of lounges and umbrellas that appear on many beaches are available for rent. A short while after sitting down, someone will approach you and ask for payment, in cash. Typical rates are EUR 10 to 20 for the day, although there are some high-end beaches that charge EUR 50 or more.
